How postgraduate eligibility works

From your bachelor’s degree to a shortlist

In India, a master’s degree usually builds on your bachelor’s major. Academic master’s programmes such as MA, MSc and MCom look at the subjects and credits you studied. Professional programmes add their own requirements: MTech needs a related engineering or approved science degree, LLM needs a recognised law degree, MD, MS and MDS need MBBS or BDS with registration, MPharm needs BPharm, MSc Nursing needs a nursing degree, and MVSc needs a veterinary degree. Management programmes such as MBA and PGDM are usually open to any graduate, while Executive MBAs add work experience.

  1. Choose your bachelor’s degree and major. Results appear straight away in three groups: strong matches, possible matches (check the university) and programmes that need an additional qualification or subject.
  2. Add optional details. Degree format, Mathematics background, work experience, career goal and study mode refine the list. Each card explains its label in one line.
  3. Search and filter. Search for MBA, MCA, GATE, CUET-PG, Data Science and more; filter by field, programme type, duration, entrance examination, match group or requirement.
  4. Open details, save and compare up to three. Details include entrance tests, the regulator and the official source.
  5. Verify before you apply. Entrance-examination eligibility and programme-admission eligibility may be different. Always check the current prospectus.

FAQs

Postgraduate and master’s eligibility questions

Which postgraduate programmes can I study after a BA?

BA graduates commonly look at an MA in their major or a related subject, MSW, MA Journalism and Mass Communication, MLISc, MA Education, MBA or PGDM, MCom at some universities, a BEd (a teaching bachelor’s, not a master’s) and the 3-year LLB. MCA, MSc Data Science and quantitative economics usually need Mathematics at Class 12 or UG. Professional programmes such as MTech, LLM, MD or MPharm are not normal routes after a BA.

Which master’s programmes can I study after a BSc?

BSc graduates can usually take an MSc in their major or a closely related subject, MCA (Mathematics is commonly required), MSc Data Science, MBA, MPH, MSc Clinical Research and, with a relevant major and a valid score, some MTech programmes. IIT JAM and CUET-PG are the main national entrance tests for MSc programmes.

Can I do an MBA after any bachelor’s degree?

Most MBA and PGDM programmes accept graduates of any discipline, usually with a minimum aggregate (often 50%, with category relaxation) and a score in CAT, XAT, CMAT, MAT or a university test. Executive MBAs also require several years of work experience. Online MBAs are valid only from UGC-DEB-entitled universities.

What is the difference between an MBA and a PGDM?

An MBA is a master’s degree awarded by a university. A PGDM is an AICTE-approved postgraduate diploma awarded by an autonomous institute. The curricula can be similar, but a PGDM is not a master’s degree; its equivalence for further study or government jobs is decided case by case.

Is Mathematics required for MCA?

AICTE norms commonly ask for Mathematics at Class 12 or graduation level for MCA, and NIMCET-based admissions set their own rules. Some universities admit graduates without Mathematics with a bridge course. Add your Mathematics background in Step 4 of the finder to see how MCA matches your profile.

Does qualifying GATE guarantee admission to MTech?

No. GATE is used for MTech/ME admissions and scholarships at many institutes, but qualifying GATE is not admission. Each institute sets branch-wise eligibility, cut-offs and sometimes interviews. MTech is normally a strong match only for BE/BTech graduates in a related branch or for approved science graduates.

Can I do an LLM without an LLB?

No. An LLM requires a recognised law degree—either a 3-year LLB after graduation or a 5-year integrated LLB. Graduates of other disciplines can first take the 3-year LLB, which is a bachelor’s degree taken after graduation. Many universities now offer a one-year LLM; some still offer a two-year LLM.

Which postgraduate courses are available after MBBS?

MBBS graduates who have completed the internship and hold medical registration can take MD, MS or DNB broad-specialty programmes through NEET-PG, as well as MPH, MHA and clinical research programmes. DM and MCh are super-specialty qualifications taken after MD/MS/DNB through NEET-SS—they are not ordinary master’s degrees.

What is the difference between MPharm and Pharm.D?

MPharm is a two-year postgraduate degree after BPharm, commonly using GPAT or university tests. Pharm.D is a separate 6-year professional doctorate after Class 12, and Pharm.D (Post Baccalaureate) is a 3-year route for BPharm graduates. The two qualifications are not interchangeable.

Can I do MSc Nursing without a nursing degree?

No. MSc Nursing requires a BSc Nursing or Post Basic BSc Nursing and registration as a Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife, following Indian Nursing Council rules. Some candidates may also need clinical experience. Graduates of other disciplines can consider MPH, MHA or clinical research instead.

Are one-year master’s degrees available in India?

Some. The UGC Curriculum and Credit Framework for Postgraduate Programmes allows a one-year master’s after a 4-year honours or honours-with-research bachelor’s, but only where a university offers that structure. Most master’s programmes are still two years after a 3-year degree. Professional degrees such as MD, MTech or MPharm follow their own regulator’s duration.

What is the difference between MEd and MA Education?

MEd is an NCTE-regulated professional degree for teacher educators and requires a BEd first. MA Education is an academic master’s that is usually open to graduates of any discipline. Choose MEd if you want to teach in teacher-education colleges; MA Education suits research, policy and education NGOs.

Is a PG diploma the same as a master’s degree?

No. PG diplomas such as PGDCA, PGD Journalism or PGD Clinical Research are usually one-year diplomas. They are useful for skills and jobs but are not master’s degrees, and they may not meet the eligibility for PhD or for jobs that ask for a master’s.

Are online master’s degrees recognised?

Online and distance master’s degrees are treated as equivalent to campus degrees only when the university is entitled by UGC-DEB for that programme and session. Regulated professional programmes such as MD, MS, MDS, MPharm, MSc Nursing, MVSc, MArch and LLM are not offered online or by distance.

How should I verify postgraduate eligibility before applying?

Read the current prospectus and admission notification for each programme; check the regulator for professional degrees (for example NMC, NBEMS, PCI, INC, COA, BCI, NCTE, VCI or ICAR); confirm the entrance test bulletin (such as CUET-PG, GATE, IIT JAM, NEET-PG, GPAT or CAT); and note minimum marks, credits and experience rules. Entrance-examination eligibility and programme-admission eligibility may be different.
